How to send files of 20 GB and more

At tens of gigabytes, every usual route ends at once. Business inboxes take 35 MB per message by default and WhatsApp takes 2 GB per document, so the question is no longer which app to send it through, but who holds the file while it travels and what that costs you. This page answers both halves: the method and the money.

We checked every figure on the provider's own page on 29 September 2026; the guides to email attachment size limits and to sending large files on WhatsApp go into the detail behind each one. None of them comes close to what you want to send, and compression does not change the order of magnitude: a batch of RAW photos or a video project is already made of compressed formats.

The two routes that are left

The hosted link. The files are encrypted on your device with AES-256-GCM before upload and stay encrypted in storage. You upload once, close the tab and send the link. The recipient opens it whenever they can.

Instant transfer. The files travel straight between the two browsers, peer-to-peer, end-to-end encrypted, and are never stored on our servers. Instant is free up to 5 GB on the free plan; above that, a paid plan has no Instant limit. Your tab has to stay open for as long as the download takes.

Choosing between them depends on timing. If the recipient can be at a computer in the same window as you, instant transfer is faster; if not, you need the hosted link.

What it costs, in practice

A hosted transfer over what the free plan includes needs a paid plan, and each plan has its own size per transfer: Basic sends up to 50 GB, Plus up to 100 GB and Premium up to 1 TB. The transfer keeps the expiry and the other settings of the plan it is sent from. Instant transfer has no per-gigabyte price, because the files never enter our storage and there is no per-gigabyte cost to track.

Which plan fits

If you send tens of gigabytes now and then, Basic raises the hosted limit to 50 GB per transfer and adds a password on the link, download notifications and an expiry of up to 7 days. If you send larger deliveries, Plus and Premium raise the size per transfer further. The current plans and prices are on the pricing page, which reads the same catalogue the server applies at checkout.

How to send it, step by step

  1. Open Transferify on your computer and drag the files or the folder onto the page.
  2. Choose how to send: Direct for an instant transfer, or Hosted for a link that stays online.
  3. If you are not signed in yet, confirm your email address with a one-time code. You do not choose a password.
  4. If the transfer goes over what the free plan includes, Transferify shows the plans that fit it, before anything uploads.
  5. Share the link over any channel, email or WhatsApp included: what travels is one line of text.

If you do not want to pay anything

Then you should know what other services offer, rather than us keeping you on the page. SwissTransfer takes transfers of up to 50 GB with no registration; its sender confirms an email address with a code, once per device. That is from swisstransfer.com and Infomaniak's getting started guide, both checked on 29 September 2026. If that is all you need for a single delivery, it is the right choice.

The reasons to pick a paid service anyway are control and continuity: from Basic the link can carry a password, you can delete a transfer you sent by mistake on any plan, and from Basic you can ask to be emailed when a download of the transfer starts. What each of these means is covered in the guide on how to send files securely.

Frequently asked questions

Which plan do I need for a hosted link above the free size?

A hosted transfer over what the free plan includes needs a paid plan. Basic sends up to 50 GB per transfer, Plus up to 100 GB and Premium up to 1 TB. Instant transfer is the other route: it is free up to 5 GB on the free plan, and above that a paid plan has no Instant limit.

Does an instant transfer cost more for a bigger file?

Instant is free up to 5 GB on the free plan. Above that, any paid plan unlocks any size, because the files travel straight between the two browsers and never reach our storage. In exchange, your tab has to stay open until the recipient has finished downloading.

How long does a large hosted transfer stay available?

It keeps the expiry of the plan it is sent from, and you can always ask for less than the maximum. Each plan's expiry is in the guide on [how long a transfer link lasts](/guide/how-long-do-transfer-links-last).

What if the recipient cannot be online at the same time as me?

Choose the hosted link. The files are uploaded once, stay encrypted in storage and can be downloaded later without your tab being open. Instant transfer only fits when you are both at a computer in the same window of time.
